The firm began in 1793 when Thomas Minton (1765–1836) founded his pottery factory in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England as "Thomas Minton and Sons", producing earthenware. He went on to become Spode's closest rival.
Minton were one of the first to make the blue and white porcelain famous and brought the Willow Pattern into popularity.
In 1820 Minton would start producing bone china ware, comparable to the fine ware of French Sèvres, of which it was greatly influenced. Minton's was the only English china factory of the 19th century to employ a Sèvres process called pâte-sur-pâte
In 1845 Minton would form a partnership with Micheal Daintry Hollins and the tile making branch of the factory became Minton Hollins & Co. Here they began to produce the world famous Minton tiles that would adorn the interiors of many institutions, churches and wealthy homes.
